Each year thousands of visitors attend our 2-day Derry Railroad Days Festival because of the parade, vendors, quality bands, low-cost family entertainment and fun we have to offer. We also offer an evening Hobo Picnic on the preceding Thursday. Derry Railroad Days prides itself in showcasing Derry’s historic railroad history and local americana charm. We are among the few festivals that focus on family fun and maintain a free to lower cost. The Derry Railroad Days Committee provides an annual Easter Egg hunt that draws hundreds of visitors from across the county on Easter Saturday morning.
Why sponsor Derry Railroad Days?
Festivals in Pennsylvania have a significant economic impact, contributing to the state’s tourism and local economies. Here are some key findings from recent studies:
- Tourism’s Economic Impact: In 2021, tourism in Pennsylvania generated $66.3 billion in economic impact, supported 452,885 jobs, and contributed $4.2 billion in state and local taxes. Festivals are a crucial part of this tourism sector, attracting visitors and boosting local businesses. Even a small local festival highlights the attractions of the local businesses and opportunities for growth in the area. Travelers to an area to visit a festival often become aware of local businesses that would have remained unknown to them before their visit to the area.
- Visitor Spending: Festivals and events drive substantial visitor spending. For example, the Autumn Leaf Festival in Clarion and the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival draw tens of thousands of visitors, who spend money on accommodations, food, and local attractions2. Derry Railroad Days attracts visitors from all over western Pennsylvania and as far away as West Virginia and Eastern Ohio.
- Economic Benefits: The economic benefits of festivals extend beyond direct spending. They also include indirect impacts such as increased demand for local suppliers and induced impacts like higher household incomes from festival-related employment1.
- These studies highlight the importance of festivals in driving economic growth and supporting local communities in Pennsylvania.
